Uncanny Valley

Birds of Avalon

Psychedelic prog rock out of Raleigh, North Carolina.  I like the sinister fuzz guitar, synth noises, and strange sounds played in reverse.  This album stays weird without being corny by maintaining a classic rock sound.

Produced and featuring Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach, it’s a collection of alternative folk songs with deep roots and dark soul. Moody, with lamenting arrangements and a melancholy feel.

Magik Markers

This album is named after a stone quarry in Hartford, CT– where this duo is from.  Mellow, noisey, minimal, darkly loose psychedelic punk rock that sounds likes it’s melting.  Female vocals are relatable and seductive.   One of the best new rock albums I’ve heard this year.

Female duo from Olympia, WA.  Minimal, cough syrupy (a light dose) keys, snyths, and some hand percussion.  I can picture these two playing these beats and singing over them in a one bedroom apartment somewhere in Olympia.  If these beats had fuller, more sophisticated production this album would be a lot more effective.

Fuzzy, mellow, minimal beach rock.  Nicole Schneit is the songwriter– her voice is beautifully androgynous.  Band is from Brooklyn.  Awesome album art too.  Solid little EP.

Public Mental Health System

Veedee

Veedee’s sophomore album Public Mental Health System is a cross between acid rock and garage rock.  The songs have a strong punk sound but averaging between four to five minutes, can they really be called punk?  (That topic can and will be debated for years).  Anyway, back to the music.  Lead singer Dan Lang sounds a bit like Glenn Danzig adding to the punk debate.  There is definitely a psychedelic/glam factor as well.  A hard rocking album that will have punk scholars debating while throwing fists in the mosh pit.

Crocodile

Ann Courtney And The Late Bloomers

Crocodile, the debut from Ann Courtney And The Late Bloomers is a mix of alt rock with a heavy country influence.  Courtney has a sound similar to PJ Harvey or Chrissie Hynde with raw lyrics that catch your attention.  An interesting album that has country style with a city attitude.

Not As Far

Three Legged Fox

Three Legged Fox’s second album, Not So Far, is a mix of rock with some reggae and ska thrown in.  The music has a festival feel to it.  Very upbeat but also with the reggae/ska influence, it almost has a jamband feel.  There is also a blues edge to the music as well.  An album to listen to with a big glass of beer or lemonade while having a barbeque.

Absolutes

Barcelona

Absolutes, a re-release from Barcelona, is an emotional indie rock album.  Adding two new tracks, Come Back When You Can and Takers and a re-recording of Colors, there’s not a lot to offer for long time fans.  They are similar to my emo rock standard, Keane.  Very melodic with impassioned singing the album fits perfectly into this genre.  However, re-releasing an album that is barely two years old gives the impression of desperation on the bands part.  The album has some good qualities but is not a stand out.
