Reenactment

Fox Japan

Fox Japan’s sophomore album, Reenactment, is an indie/punk album.  Politically charged lyrics dealing with modern day dilemmas help separate this album from the rest of the indie rock gang.  The album does have a tongue in cheek feel to it, but it’s still a decent album to listen to.

Joanna Newsom - Have One On Me

Joanna Newsom

A true accomplishment for the highly revered freak-folk songstress. Threading themes of love and family into a dynamically resonant assemblage of carefully plucked harp strings, richly textured vocal melodies, and purposeful orchestral accompaniment. Newsom’s voice and compositional technique has matured beautifully with these songs that are both welcoming and curious.

RIYL: Joni Mitchell, Alela Diane, Devendra Banhart

Avant-garde works of dynamic energy. Tracks 1-15 sound like their musical title; track 16 is a choral work. Most tracks less than 2 mins. in length. Play any!

The composer’s works are highly varied, utilizing diverse instruments and styles. Witty vocal introductions for the peculiar plants tracks (1-7). Tracks 11-15 Asian influenced, 16 -20 abstract. All very interesting! Play any!

The New Cello, Vol. 1: American Composers

These are contemporary works showing the cello’s great range, yet are not necessarily beautiful in tone (as the cello has traditionally been used). Can be difficult listening with some dissonance, and different tunings. Works by Carter, Johnston, Smith and Cox.
