Nick Curran and The Lowlifes- Reform School Girl
release date February 16,2010 on Electro Groove Records
Let’s just say that rockabilly and old rock and roll are guilty pleasures of mine that I’ll occasionally engage in. Upon inspection of this album, it seemed appealing with the cover. Moving beyond that, I found an album that sounds like it would fit in well with blues and rock from the 1950s. Track 1 opens this album with upbeat rockabilly, extolling the virtues of the stand-up bass, piano and the guitar of Nick Curran. Track 2 has more of a straightforward blues influence, complete with a swagger that if it clicks, should have you humming along in no time. Curran’s influences are as diverse as his guitar skills, ranging from Chuck Berry, Richie Valens, The Ronettes and John Lee Hooker to bands like The Ramones and The Misfits. Track 3 has more of a girl-group feel to it and has a little more pop to it. Track 5 is more upbeat with a traditional rock and roll feel. Overall, this is a very well composed album that is a must-listen for any fan of rock and roll and/or blues. It’s also full of fun and can appeal to a younger audience.
