New Traditionalists, an album released in 1981 by Devo, has been remastered and re-released in 2010. Devo was thrust into the Pop spotlight with the 1980 hit “Whip It”. They continued, however, to make their Avant Guarde, Minimal Wave electronic music and with tracks like “Through Being Cool” they re-asserted their independence from the Pop world. Devo’s music as stated before is a mix of Minimal Wave with a quirky, proto Electro Rock sound. The re-release of this album is perfect since the resurgence of Minimal Wave/New Wave Electro Rock is gaining prominence these days. Either way, this is a good album to introduce new listeners to the robotic nerdyness of Devo and to remind us where the current music we listten to came from.
