The Roots of Chicha 2 — Psychedelic Cumbias from Peru
Various Artists
review by djkloog
As far as this reviewer understands it, Peruvian electric cumbia was created as a hybrid of traditional Peruvian music (which differed from place to place, and ranged from the more popular Spanish Criolla music and traditional huaynos to Folclor– music from the Andes) with cumbia rythms and brushes of surf, psychedelia, and other bits and pieces from around the globe. The resulting sounds were unique expressions of the areas in which they were being created– mainly in the slums of Lima, Iquitos, and the highlands of the Andes. The producer of these compilations, Olivier Conan, is showcasing the evolution and eclecticism of Peruvian psych cumbia and chicha, here from 1965-1981. The musicians featured here are the pioneers — technical wizards with that experimental edge active during some turbulent times in Latin America.
