BLACK MOTH SUPER RAINBOW

review by slomotron
Thursday, June 30th, 2011

Reissue of the 2007 album Dandelion Gum with 14 extra songs.  “Deep in the woods of western Pennsylvania vocoders hum amongst the flowers and synths bubble under the leaf-strewn ground while flutes whistle in the wind and beats bounce to the soft drizzle of a warm acid rain. As the sun peeks out from between the clouds, the organic aural concoction of Black Moth Super Rainbow starts to glisten above the trees.”  Dark/Experimental/Psych/folk/electronica/pop.
31 tracks, lots to explore!
PLAY: 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 23, 28, 30, 31 FCC CLEAN  RIYL: Ariel Pink, early Beck, Unknown Mortal Orchestra

The Appleseed Cast

review by slomotron
Thursday, June 30th, 2011

Formerly more Emo like Sunny Day Real Estate, The Appleseed Cast have progressed into a solid post-rock band like Explosions in The Sky. Mostly instrumental (except track 3), and  “on the EP’s lead track, “End Frigate Constellation”, the band’s guitars both roar and hum softly, the drums splash and confidently march in the right places, the bass both provides a tonal bottom for it all to stand on and, occasionally provides a song’s main instrumental melody, cribbing from post-punk.”  -graveface

THE NIGHTYNITE

review by slomotron
Thursday, June 30th, 2011

From Graveface Records: “John Congleton and Jason Garner of The Paper Chase have teamed up with some good friends to form a new band called The Nighty Nite. Joining them are members of Wires Under Tension (Chris Tignor), Shearwater (Kevin Schneider), and the Hospital Ships (Jordan Geiger). The band’s debut EP Dimples sounds like the soundtrack to a tragic black comedy, as if Woody Allen made a horror movie about a punk rock band.”  also “The four songs on The Nighty Nite’s Dimples EP echo and marry John Cale’s sardonic mix of pop/orchestra/skronk and the atmospheric doom of late-period Scott Walker.” “Terrifying musical rises and noisy crescendos”. Track 4 is a distorted Magnetic Fields cover .  play: 2, 3, 1, 4 FCC CLEAN   RIYL:  The Paper Chase, Unicorns

Sentimental, soft pop, twee-esque and a little bit country that wears it’s “bubblegum heart on its sleeve.” Influenced by their favorite things: West Coast, Beach Boys and Nashville. Boy/girl vocals & harmonies, Fender Rhodes Organ, strings, lap steel, banjo, harmonica, trumpet and even glockenspiel! Fronted by Ian McCutcheon (drummer for Slowdive and Mojave Three).

“lonely twin”

by HOSPITAL SHIPS

review by slomotron
Thursday, June 30th, 2011

Jordan Geiger’s (Shearwater, Appleseed Cast, Minus Story) sophomore album as Hospital Ships. Graduating from tender bedroom-pop to “Midwestern existential fuzz-pop”: Still tender with high-pitched tenor & falsetto vocals but also bouncy, upbeat, melodic, rough-around-the-edges. Help from electric piano, cello and “injecting enough electronic beats, buzzing organ riffs, and joyous handclaps”. “Lonely Twin also alights in AM pop, doom rock, and dusty folk territory”.  play: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8   FCC: 6
RIYL: Flaming Lips, Death Cab, Bright Eyes, Shins, Built To Spill
