Saw this in my file and thought that it was a newer release, which it isn’t. No fear as I’ve only started to take baby steps into what’s described as psychedelic punk. The only other band I’ve seen with this moniker is Triclops! and their latest album nearly blew my mind as well. I’m all about experimenting with new styles and sounds whenever possible, hence my desire to review this album. I’m going to ignore convention here and review the tracks as I see fit, usually out of order.
“Magnum Opus” is a 16 minute mess of several different cross-genres. At first, it evokes Crass with lo-fi, crusty guitar work. It then morphs into a trippy droning fit. The use of a Moog synthesizer is an interesting choice and it shines through on this track. I think it would be safe to make a Boris reference here as there’s also a strong noise rock feel. After 14 minutes in, the drums cascade in such a manner that evoke Keith Moon. Very impressive.
“Let’s Get Stabbed” is divided up into 5 parts with a sum total of 5 and a half minutes. There’s a decent grunge quality to each track with more emphasis on SHORT, FAST, LOUD!!! than anything else. It’s a daring attempt to catch the ear of the listener by splitting things up as opposed to combining them in one whole track.
“New Bedford Book of the Dead” makes good use of a Theramin. Lots of “oohs and ahhs” mated to a psychedelic rock background. “Pissing on a Drowning Man” has an angry, brooding feel but is otherwise similar in nature with use of a Moog. “Queen of Death” is difficult to discern as there are so many competing sounds that overlap and take you on a long trip to nowhere.
This is a very interesting album and quite possibly one of the most diverse I have reviewed up until now. I have no idea why it took so long for this album to arrive. I am glad that it has though. Well worth a listen!
