Fangnawa Experience

Fanga & Maalem Abdallah Guinéa

review by jaypaul

A collaboration between the French Afrobeat/Highlife band Fanga, and the Moroccan maâlem (master) musician Abdallah Guinéa. The compositions are by Fanga. Guinéa is known for adapting traditional trance-inducing Gnawa music to create a style he calls “fusion-trance.” He’s also a master of the gimbri (3-string lute), which is featured in this recording. The overall sound is North African desert trance with gimbri plus subtle guitar, bass, percussion, keyboards, occasional horns, and male vocals (chanting, call-response, etc).  Tracks are long, but fascinating.
