Hung at Heart

The Growlers

review by Lev

The Growlers describe their genre of music best by calling it ‘beach goth’. Coming out of southern california, and their music is a location appropriate blend of surf psych and garage with some country tinge that immediately brings out comparisons to The Black Lips. The production is cleaner than their previous releases, possibly due to the musical guiding of Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys who helped out in the first stages of the album. Almost all the songs on Hung at Heart have been previously released in tape form on Burger Records. Songs such as “Living In a Memory” dip into honkeytonk, and most the album rolls with some great surf tunes.
