Two Piano Music of Messiaen & Debussy

review by Laima
Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

Two works by French composers, one impressionistic (and reviled by Saint-Saens–Blanc et Noir by Debussy), the other highly dichotomous moving from loveliness to near dissonance (Messiaen’s Visions de l’Amen). Try sampling due to length.

Italian composer Ponchielli (1834-1886) is most known for his Dance of the Hours (”La Gionconda”) ballet, and like other composers of his time, non-operatic works were ignored in Italy. This CD has examples of his chamber works, and reveals his knowledge of the wind instruments and  his interesting combinations of them. Play any!

Someone Will Take Care of Me–Corey Dargel

review by Laima
Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

These are modern song cycles based on classical song cycles but in the pop vocal style, but with fairly obvious classical musical styles. The composer seeks to mix classical with pop and succeeds admirably. Lyrics quirky, interesting and even sad. CD1 tracks  with International Contemporary Ensemble, CD 2 tracks with synths and piano.  Try any!
