Italian composer Ponchielli (1834-1886) is most known for his Dance of the Hours (”La Gionconda”) ballet, and like other composers of his time, non-operatic works were ignored in Italy. These are modern song cycles based on classical song cycles but in the pop vocal style, but with fairly obvious classical musical styles.
