Falsetto R&B vocals float over choppy beats that are layered in harps, orchestral strings and ambiance. Total Loss is the follow up to How To Dress Well’s debut, Love Remains. In Love Remains, Tom Krell (How To Dress Well)’s vocals seemed to be shimmering behind a wall of ambience and the extremely lo-fi recording deteriorated his voice leaving it to be eaten up by the instrumentals. The most noticeable difference on this album is a much higher production quality. Instead of being skewed by the lo-fi recording, Krell’s vocals now stand in front of the beats. Each song is beautiful, and the album demonstrates How To Dress Well’s dominance over the lo-fi R&B genre that he helped pioneer.
